Prograde Greens Drink Review: First Taste Test

I just got my order of Prograde’s new greens drink yesterday and wanted to do the ole taste test.

Most greens drinks are full of fillers and taste horrible.

I love the ingredient list and this one, but would it taste bad?

My buddy Jayson at Prograde assured me that this one was better, but I wanted to plunk down my own coin and see for myself.

Common Questions About Prograde’s Greens Drink Genesis

I had some great questions about the new Prograde Greens Product called Genesis, so I wanted to make sure you got all the info directly from Jayson Hunter himself.

I talked to Jayson about this product when I was presenting at the ISSN Conference in Vegas this past year, as he was so excited about it.

Check out the top questions below

Question: How is Genesis different from your typical greens formula?

Genesis is designed with 2 specific objectives.

1. To reduce internal inflammation that scientists are uncovering to be a major underlying reason why certain diseases are so prevalent. Reduce internal inflammation and there is a reduced risk for diseases to rear their ugly head.

2. Control appetite and blood sugar levels so that you don’t overeat as well as utilize the food you do eat rather than spike blood sugars and promote fat storage.

Question: How did you decide on the formula?

Most green products on the market have been focusing on just trying to see how many fruits and vegetables they can put into a formula.  Now this can be good from an alkaline/acidic relationship and an antioxidant level, but other than that it doesn’t do much more.

Based on the research that is emerging regarding internal inflammation and how it can lead to not only an increased risk of disease, but also increased fat storage we felt that Prograde Genesis needed to help with specific health issues.  That means we have to use specific nutrients and more importantly in specific quantities.

You can’t have a splattering of four to five dozen fruits and vegetables and expect to have significant therapeutic levels of each one.  There are also many other nutrients besides fruits and vegetables that reduce inflammation.  Not to mention they work synergistically with nutrients from fruits and vegetables to maximize the benefit rather than working by themselves.

Question: Why your focus on ingredients to reduce inflammation?

Inflammation and particularly chronic inflammation is now the new “silent” killer. Chronic inflammation rarely is painful and rarely do you ever show symptoms that YOUR very cells are INFLAMED! Chronic inflammation impedes the body’s ability to repair and heal tissue.  Your body always tries to repair and replace damaged cells.

When you are exposed to chronic inflammation, IT MAKES IT HARDER for YOUR body to heal damaged cells! Chronic inflammation falls below the pain threshold, making it impossible to detect.  But damage to certain cells can cause long lasting, and even INTENSE pain.

Chronic inflammation can target cells of the central nervous system, altering the cells that affect your pain centers. Here are some diseases linked to chronic inflammation which is present in YOUR body:

– Acute and Chronic Pain
– Cerebrovascular Disease (strokes and poor circulation to the most vital organ, YOUR BRAIN)
– Cancer
– Alzheimer’s Disease and other neurodegenerative diseases
– Type II Diabetes
– Autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, irritable bowel syndrome, and ulcerative colitis)
– Allergies
– Pulmonary disease
– Sarcopenia

These diseases have been linked by one common thread- chronic inflammation!

Question: How does inflammation trip up your muscle growth and fat loss?

Inflammation as well as an over-reactive/imbalanced immune system allow the fat cells to stay in a dysfunctional or “sick” state.  This makes it more difficult for the fat cells to respond to fat burning signals or fat liberating.  When you can control your internal inflammation level it allows your body to also maintain a balanced Immune system, which promotes healthy cytokine levels and immune signaling.

Inflammation is a threat to your body and immune system so having higher levels of internal inflammation can wreak havoc on the homeostasis level of your body.

One other specific set of nutrients we included for inflammation control and weight loss is probiotic/prebiotics.  There is a growing connection to sustained weight/fat loss.  Healthy bacteria that colonize the human gut are associated with improved long-term weight management, better insulin metabolism, and optimized immune system….  These are all CRITICAL FOR LONG-TERM WEIGHT/FAT LOSS SUCCESS.  A lapse in any one or all of these systems will SABOTAGE long-term weight/fat loss efforts and act as ROADBLOCKS, hence increasing the likelihood of experiencing the dreaded YO-YO or REBOUND Weight/Fat Gain after a period of Fat Loss.

Weight loss is often a “stressful” event to many of your body’s control systems including your Immune system, Adrenal hormones, Cortisol hormones, and Oxidative stress.  The specific formula and ingredients we use in Prograde Genesis helps to MAINTAIN & RESTORE the balance in these systems.

You can imagine that in regards to muscle growth when your body is chronically inflamed your body is not able to focus on building new muscle, but rather it has to try and fix many of your body’s control systems and attempt to lower your inflammation level.

To summarize:  Your body has more important things to focus on to survive rather than build new muscle.

Question: What is the equivalent of 1 scoop of Genesis?

That’s a great question.  However, a tough one to answer in black and white.

Much like it is difficult to put a TOTAL number of fruit/vegetable/botanical/spice value on one serving of greens, we also run into similar difficulty with cost, since it always comes down to WHAT particular nutrient or phytochemical.  So, it’s “relative” to what nutrient or phytoflavonoid or compound, etc…  Not just a lump sum value.

Something that other “Greens” products like to do is assign ORAC values.  Again with ORAC that is just ONE MEASUREMENT, and even it can be misleading in terms of really assessing the total redox/antioxidant and health benefits of a food/supplement.

It may be equivalent to 1 apple in some nutrients ($1 worth), but yet 4-6 cups of blueberries in another nutrient ($7-$8 worth), and 2-3 pounds of aloe vera in another ($5 worth), 4 cups of yogurt ($5 worth), $3-$4 worth of high quality mushrooms, $2 worth of oatmeal, $2.50 worth of cinnamon, yet in other nutrients (like minerals and standard vitamins) it may have only ($2 worth of standard fruits/veggies).

This also does not include the labor/technology required to PROCESS these typical botanicals, spices, fruits and vegetables.  So, if someone were to try to ultraconcentrate, freeze-dry, dehydrate, extract and try micronizing ANY or ALL of the components in Genesis, that would add big time to the alternative cost as well.

Question: Muscle guys are concerned with fiber post workout because it slows digestion of their protein. How much fiber?

It is only 3 grams and with most proteins on the market being instantized the fiber will not significantly slow down their protein digestion. In short, it’s not something you need to worry about 🙂

Question: What does the “cost per serving” work out to?

One serving is likely equivalent to $2 worth of food in some nutrients but up to $8-$15 worth of superfoods in other nutrients. Hence, all in all, you would likely need to spend $30-$40 per serving just in the cost of raw materials/food to end up with the combination and concentrations of certain phytonutrient compounds found in one serving of Prograde Genesis. This doesn’t even include the labor/technology and processing costs.

Question: Amazing! But I wanted to know how much is 1 scoop going to cost me? How many days does 1 box last for?

Gotcha! They come in single serving pouches and there are 30 pouches per box. So if you work out 4x a week it would last 7.5 weeks.

So it is $2.66 per pouch if on Smart Ship or if they purchased the 6 box option.

Thanks Jayson, much appreciated!
